LOS ANGELES COUNTY COMMISSION ON HUMAN RELATIONS
Research and Data Entry for Web-Searchable Database of Human Relations
Resources
1. OBJECTIVE:
To procure a student intern to perform research of Los Angeles-base
human relations organizations and database entry of this information
for the Commission's searchable website database of human relations
resources. Position requires cursory knowledge of human relations resources
in the County of Los Angeles, for example, community based organizations
that provide assistance in the areas of hate crime victim assistance,
human relations curriculum, peer mediation, conflict resolution, and
support services serving the many ethnic, cultural and faith communities
in the County. Knowledge of data entry systems is also required.
2. BACKGROUND:
The Los Angeles Human Relations Commission is one of the oldest and
largest agencies of its kind in the United States. The Commission works
to foster harmonious and equitable inter-group relations, empower communities
and institutions, engage in non-violent conflict resolution and promote
an informed and inclusive multicultural society. The Commission is contacted
for hate crime victim assistance and anti-discrimination resources by
schools, cities, community leaders, hate crime victims, the faith community,
immigrant communities, and several other sectors of Los Angeles County.
In this way, the Commission's Human Relations Database will provide
vital and valuable information and resources that will help communities,
cities, schools, businesses, and individuals stand up to and address
hate crimes and discrimination all over Los Angeles County.
3. PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE:
The period of performance will commence upon execution of agreement
between the intern and the Commission. All tasks described in Section
1 above will be completed by 2 months after the date of execution of
such agreement. Project hours will be based on availability of intern.
4. COMPENSATION:
Due to restricted budget of the Commission resultant from across-the-board
budget cutbacks in Los Angeles County departments, the Commission is
unable to provide financial compensation for interns. However, the Commission
has remained an attractive placement for interns due to exposure gained
and relationships built with some of the most prominent agencies in
Los Angeles working in the area of hate crime, civil rights, social
justice, anti-discrimination, and immigrant rights
INTERNSHIP
LOS ANGELES COUNTY COMMISSION ON HUMAN RELATIONS
Assist in the Coordination of the Youth Advisory Council Team
1. OBJECTIVE:
To procure a student intern to assist in the coordination of the Youth
Advisory Council Team,
a Commission program created to give a youth voice to the programs of
the County Human Relations Commission and to empower youth to speak
up against bias, discrimination and inequity where they see it. At regular
meetings, members engage in an in-depth exploration of interpersonal
and peace building skills, the creation of safer schools and communities,
the prevention of hate-related violence and discrimination in their
schools and communities. Members then work together to implement projects
based on this learning that aim to directly address discrimination,
intergroup violence and inequities in communities and schools. Some
Youth ACT projects have included the production of a CD of songs members
wrote that reflect their own experiences of discrimination.. Youth ACT
members have also provided valuable focus group input on the development
of anti-discrimination ads and public service announcements created
in collaboration with Rock the Vote. Both projects share the goal of
inspiring Los Angeles County youth to stand up against discrimination
and oppression when they see it.
